The journey begins early in the morning when you are picked up from your hotel in Cusco at around 3:30 AM. From there, you’ll travel to the Ollantaytambo train station for a scenic ride through the Sacred Valley to Km 104, the starting point of your hike. After meeting your guide and showing your permits at the Inca Trail checkpoint, the adventure officially begins. Your first stop is the archaeological site of Chachabamba, a beautiful ruin nestled in the jungle. Here, your guide will introduce you to the fascinating history of the Incas and the significance of the trail.
From Chachabamba, you’ll begin a gradual climb along the original Inca pathway, surrounded by lush forests and breathtaking views of the Urubamba River. After a few hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at the stunning ruins of Wiñay Wayna, meaning “forever young” in Quechua. This site is a masterpiece of Inca engineering, with agricultural terraces, ceremonial centers, and impressive stonework. You’ll take time to explore the site and enjoy a packed lunch while learning about its history and purpose.
After lunch, the trek continues toward the Sun Gate, or Intipunku, the ceremonial entrance to Machu Picchu. From here, you’ll get your first breathtaking view of the Lost City of the Incas. Arriving in the late afternoon means fewer crowds, allowing you to soak in the tranquility and beauty of this iconic site. After enjoying the views, you’ll descend to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll check into your hotel and enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.
The second day of the Short Inca Trail
On the second day, you’ll wake early for a bus ride up to Machu Picchu, arriving as the sun rises over the ancient city. After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore on your own or hike one of the optional mountains, such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (advanced booking required).
After your visit, you’ll return to Aguas Calientes by bus, where you can enjoy lunch and explore the charming town.
