This 3-day adventure takes you from Cusco to the heart of the Manu Amazon jungle. You will explore the Manu cultural zone, travel by road and boat, and stay in basic but comfortable jungle lodges. Along the way, you will see many birds, monkeys, and other animals in their natural environment.
We pick you up early from your hotel in Cusco between 5:30 and 6:00 AM. On the way, we visit the ancient tombs of Ninamarca at 3750 meters and the traditional town of Paucartambo. We continue to Acjanaco Pass at 4000 meters, which is the official entrance to Manu National Park from Cusco.
From there, we descend into the cloud forest, a beautiful area full of orchids, ferns, and birds. We take a short walk to look for the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, the national bird of Peru. With some luck, we may also see trogons, quetzals, or even a spectacled bear. In the afternoon, we arrive in Pilcopata at 550 meters and spend the night in a jungle lodge with a private bathroom and shower.
After breakfast, we travel for 45 minutes by bus to the river port of Atalaya at 490 meters. There we board a motorized boat for a 30-minute ride along the river. We arrive at Paititi Lodge, located in the Manu cultural zone. The lodge has private bathrooms and showers.
After lunch, we visit Machuwasi Lagoon by wooden catamaran. This area is perfect for spotting wildlife. You may see hoatzins, monkeys, reptiles, insects, and maybe capybaras. In the evening, there is an optional night walk in the Manu Amazon jungle to look for nocturnal animals. We spend the night at the lodge.
Very early in the morning, we take a 45-minute boat ride to visit a parrot clay lick. Here, three to four species of green parrots gather to eat the mineral-rich clay. After observing this colorful wildlife activity, we return to the lodge for breakfast.
Then we begin our journey back to Cusco. We travel by boat to Atalaya and then continue by private bus, passing again through the cloud forest. We expect to arrive in Cusco between 6:30 and 7:00 PM.
The Manu National Park rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, home to countless species of plants and animals. In the Cultural Zone of Manu National Park, where our 3-day tours take you, you may encounter monkeys, capybaras, colorful birds like toucans and macaws, and fascinating insects such as butterflies and frogs. There’s a chance to see a butterfly from Manu National Park up close, or even a playful troop of tamarins in the trees. With some luck, you might even spot a capybara near the river or hear the calls of howler monkeys echo through the forest.
The animals in Manu National Park are part of a complex food web that includes predators like the elusive jaguar, though sightings of big cats are rare. The park is also home to over 1,000 bird species, dozens of reptile and amphibian species, and many types of mammals. This makes Manu National Park biodiversity some of the richest in the world. The region protects many endangered species in Manu National Park, including rare monkeys and forest cats.
The rainforest also supports an enormous variety of life through its dense vegetation. You’ll see unique plants in Manu National Park, from towering trees to medicinal herbs and exotic flowers.
Please note: This is the real Amazon jungle. Sightings of wild animals are never guaranteed. They live freely and move as they wish. These include our 5-day, 6-day, or 7-day Manu Reserved Zone tours, which take you deeper into the untouched Manu National Park Amazon, far from any human settlements.
