3-Day Puerto Maldonado Lake Sandoval and Macaw Clay Lick tour trip details

3-Day Puerto Maldonado Lake Sandoval and Macaw Clay Lick tour itinerary

We recommend arriving (day 1) before 9:30 AM, but later is also possible.
We recommend leaving (day 3) after 1:00 PM, but earlier is also possible.

Day 1 – Arrival & Amazon jungle introduction

Morning:
Arrive in Puerto Maldonado, where we meet you and begin the adventure with a 2-hour car and 30-minute boat trip to the lodge. Welcome drink and lodge briefing.

Afternoon:
Go for your first jungle hike in primary rainforest. Learn about medicinal plants and try to spot monkeys and birds. Climb the canopy tower for amazing views of the rainforest.

Evening:
Optional night boat ride to spot caimans on the Tambopata River. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 2 – Macaw Clay Lick + kayaking + night walk

Tip: Mornings can be cold, especially during boat rides to the Macaw Clay Lick bring a waterproof and warm layer to stay comfortable.

Early morning:
Wake up before sunrise and head to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick. From a safe distance, watch the macaws arrive in large, colorful flocks. Breakfast is served by the river, in front of the clay lick.

Late morning / Afternoon:
Time for a fun kayaking trip on the Tambopata River. You may see capybaras, turtles, and river birds.

Evening:
After dinner, take a night walk through the forest. Look for frogs, spiders, insects, and maybe a snake.

Day 3 – Sandoval Lake day trip

Tip: At Sandoval Lake, there’s little to no shade. Wear sun-protective clothing, a hat, and sunscreen to stay protected during the canoe ride.

Morning:
Return to Puerto Maldonado and head to the city port. Take a 40-minute boat ride into Tambopata National Reserve. Then walk 3 km through the forest to reach Sandoval Lake.

Afternoon:
Explore the lake by canoe. Look for howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and many birds. If you’re lucky, you might spot giant river otters. Enjoy lunch by the lake.

Late afternoon:
Return to Puerto Maldonado. Drop off in Puerto Maldonado city, close to Plaza Mayor.

Note: If your flight or bus on day 3 is early, we may visit Sandoval Lake on day 1 instead. This is only possible if you arrive in the morning. In that case, you’ll go to the lake first, then travel to the lodge (by car from Puerto Maldonado city, and boat after) in the evening. This way, you won’t miss any activities.

Note: The itinerary is subject to change. Times are approximate and may vary.
