Preparing for the Huayhuash trek 6 days
Get ready for high altitudes
The Huayhuash Trek in 6 days takes you deep into the high Andes, with several passes over 4700 meters. To enjoy this trek safely and comfortably, we recommend arriving in Huaraz at least two to three days before the start of the tour. This gives your body time to adjust to the altitude (3100m) and lowers the risk of altitude sickness.
During these days, it’s a good idea to stay active but not overexert yourself. Short acclimatization hikes, like Lake 69 or Lake Rocotuyoc, are great options. We recommend doing 3 acclimatization hikes. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and eat light meals to help your body adapt.
Train your body before the Huayhuash trek 6 days
This huayhuash trek 6 days includes long hiking days with steep climbs, rocky trails, and high passes. Building your endurance ahead of time is important. Activities like hiking, running, cycling, or swimming help prepare your heart and lungs.
You can also do strength training at home, exercises like squats, lunges, and step-ups help strengthen the muscles you’ll use the most. If possible, go on practice hikes with a daypack to get used to walking with some weight over time.
Gear up and pack smart
Make sure your hiking boots are well broken in, this is one of the best ways to avoid blisters. Layered clothing is essential, as mountain weather can change quickly. Bring moisture-wicking base layers, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof jacket. A hat, gloves, and sun protection are also important.
Once you book your huayhuash trek 6 days, we’ll send you practical info to help you get the most out of this incredible adventure in the Cordillera Huayhuash.
Difficulty of the Huayhuash Trek 6 days
The Huayhuash Trek in Peru is a challenging hike. Most of the trail is above 4,000 meters, and you cross several high mountain passes, including San Antonio Pass at 5,100 meters. The altitude, long hiking days, and cold nights make it harder than many other treks in Peru. The Huayhuash Trek 6 days is shorter than the 8 day Huayhuash trek and the 10 day huayhuash trek, but it still requires good fitness and preparation. It is not the most difficult trek in the world, but it is one of the most demanding in South America.
Best time to hike the 6-day Huayhuash Trek
The best time to do the Huayhuash Trek in Peru is from May to September. This is the dry season in the Andes, and you’ll have more sunny days, clear skies, and better trail conditions. June, July, and August are the most popular months for Huayhuash trekking because the weather is usually stable and visibility is excellent.
April and October are also possible, but you may get some light rain. The full Cordillera Huayhuash trail can still be done in those months, though conditions may vary.
From November to March, it’s the rainy season. Trails can be muddy, and clouds often block mountain views. Landslides and stream crossings can also make some sections unsafe. For this reason, guided tours usually do not operate during this time.
If you want the best experience on your Huayhuash trek 6 days, choose the dry season months. You’ll enjoy better views of mountains like Yerupajá, Siula Grande, and Jirishanca, and the trail is safer.
Weather on the Huayhuash Trek
The Cordillera Huayhuash has two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. Knowing the difference is important when planning your Huayhuash trek 6 days in Peru.
Dry season (May to September) – Best time for trekking
This is the best time of year for the Huayhuash Trek 6 Days. Days are mostly sunny with clear skies and low chances of rain. This means you get the best views of the mountains, lakes, and valleys. The trails are dry and safer to hike.

- Night temperatures: 0°C to 5°C (32°F to 41°F), sometimes colder
- You’ll still need to be prepared for sudden changes — short rain showers or snow can happen, especially at high passes.
June, July, and August are the most popular months. They are also the coldest at night, but the skies are usually the clearest. It’s perfect for photography and high-mountain trekking.
Rainy season (November to March)
During the rainy season, it rains more often, especially in the afternoons. The weather is cloudy, trails become muddy and slippery, and rivers can rise. This makes the Huayhuash Trek 6 days more dangerous and the mountain views less visible.
- Heavy rain can cause landslides or make some trails hard to pass.
- Visibility is less, and camping is less comfortable due to wet gear and cold winds.
Shoulder months (April and October)
In April and October, the weather can be a mix. These months are less busy and can still offer good conditions, but you may get light rain. Trails can be a bit muddy, and the views may be less predictable.
