Huayhuash Trek 8 days itinerary

Day 1: Huaraz to Cuartelhuain to Mitucocha

Distance: 10 km | Elevation gain: +600m

  • Morning: Pick up from your stay in Huaraz at 3:00 – 4:00 am for the Cordillera Huayhuash.
  • Afternoon: Arrive at Cuartelhuain (4180m) and hike over Punta Cacanan Pass (4750m).
  • Evening: Descend to the first campsite at Laguna Mitucocha (4150m). This first day of the huayhuash trek 8 days is a great introduction to the mountains.

Day 2: Mitucocha to Carhuacocha

Distance: 13 km | Elevation gain: +550m

  • Morning: Climb up to Alcaycocha Pass (4700m), enjoying the views of the Cordillera Huayhuash peaks.
  • Afternoon: Walk down to the beautiful Carhuacocha lagoon and camp with mountain reflections all around.

Day 3: Carhuacocha to Huayhuash

Distance: 12 km | Elevation gain: +650m

  • Morning: Walk beside the lake and enjoy the famous view of the three lagoons with Yerupajá and Siula peaks in the background.
  • Afternoon: Climb to Siula Pass (4800m), one of the scenic highlights of the huayhuash trek in peru.
  • Evening: Descend to the Huayhuash campsite and relax under the stars.

Day 4: Huayhuash to Campo Elefantes

Distance: 10 km | Elevation gain: +700m

  • Morning: Begin the hike with a steady climb to Trapecio Pass (5000m), the highest point of this 8-day adventure.
  • Afternoon: Admire views of Trapecio, Cuyoc, and Pumarinri mountains. Set up camp at Campo Elefantes and enjoy the peace of the cordillera huayhuash.

Day 5: Campo Elefantes to Paso San Antonio to Huayllapa

Distance: 15 km | Elevation gain: +300m

  • Morning: Hike up to San Antonio Pass (4990m) for one of the best viewpoints of the entire huayhuash peru range.
  • Afternoon: Long descent into the Cutatambo valley and continue toward the village of Huayllapa.
  • Evening: Arrive in Huayllapa and set up camp. It’s a good place to charge your phone and enjoy a shower. Total hiking time is about 8 hours.

Day 6: Huayllapa to Gashpapampa

Distance: 10 km | Elevation gain: +800m

  • Morning: Hike through the green Huatiac valley and climb to Tapush Pass (4800m).
  • Afternoon: A short descent brings you to the Gashpapampa campsite, surrounded by hills and quiet landscapes.

Day 7: Gashpapampa to Jahuacocha

Distance: 12 km | Elevation gain: +600m

  • Morning: Trek up to Yaucha Pass (4800m), with a chance to see many snowy peaks of the huayhuash trekking route.
  • Afternoon: Stop at Puka Puka viewpoint before descending to the scenic Jahuacocha Lake.
  • Evening: Enjoy your last night of trekking huayhuash at the lake, a favorite campsite for many travelers.

Day 8: Jahuacocha to Pocpa to Huaraz

Distance: 12 km | Elevation gain: +300m

  • Morning: Climb gently to Punta Jahuacocha (4700m) for final mountain views.
  • Afternoon: Hike down to Pocpa village, where your transport will be waiting to take you back to Huaraz.
