Huayhuash Trek 8 days itinerary

Day 1: Huaraz to Janca (Mitucocha camp)

Distance: ~9 km | Elevation gain: ~660 m

  • Morning: Leave Huaraz at 4:00 am and drive through Chiquián, Llamac, and Pocpa to Cuartelhuain (4180 m).
  • Afternoon: Start hiking from Cuartelhuain and climb to Cacanan Punta Pass (4700 m).
  • Evening: Descend and set up camp at Janca (4200 m).

Day 2: Janca to Carhuacocha

Distance: ~11.5 km | Elevation gain: ~630 m

  • Morning: Climb gradually toward Carhuac Pass (4650 m).
  • Afternoon: Descend to Carhuacocha Lake (4300 m) with views of Yerupajá, Siula Grande, and Jirishanca.
  • Evening: Relax and camp beside the lake.

Day 3: Carhuacocha to Huayhuash Camp

Distance: ~15.5 km | Elevation gain: ~785 m

  • Morning: Walk past Gangrajanca and Siula lakes and reach the Three Lagoons viewpoint.
  • Afternoon: Cross Siula Pass (4800 m) and descend past Carnicero Lake.
  • Evening: Camp near the village of Huayhuash (4300 m).

Day 4: Huayhuash to Elefante Pampa

Distance: ~11.5 km | Elevation gain: ~790 m

  • Morning: Begin a challenging climb to Trapecio Pass (5000 m).
  • Afternoon: Enjoy panoramic views and descend through rocky terrain.
  • Evening: Camp at Elefante Pampa (4500 m).

Day 5: Elefante Pampa to Huayllapa

Distance: ~18 km | Elevation gain: ~600 m

  • Morning: Climb to San Antonio Pass (5000 m) for one of the best views of the Cordillera Huayhuash.
  • Afternoon: Long descent through Calinca Valley.
  • Evening: Arrive and camp in the village of Huayllapa (3600 m).

Day 6: Huayllapa to Gashpapampa

Distance: ~11 km | Elevation gain: ~1200 m

  • Morning: Hike through the Huatiac Valley and climb to Tapush Pass (4800 m).
  • Afternoon: Enjoy views of Diablo Mudo and Susucocha Lake.
  • Evening: Camp at Gashpapampa (4500 m).

Day 7: Gashpapampa to Jahuacocha

Distance: ~10 km | Elevation gain: ~440 m

  • Morning: Climb to Yaucha Pass (4750 m) with panoramic mountain views.
  • Afternoon: Stop at Jahuacocha viewpoint and descend to the lake.
  • Evening: Camp beside Jahuacocha Lake (4000 m).

Day 8: Jahuacocha to Pocpa to Huaraz

Distance: ~9 km | Elevation gain: ~550 m

  • Morning: Climb a final pass at 4600 m with last views of the range.
  • Afternoon: Descend to Pocpa village.
  • Evening: Private transport back to Huaraz.
