Choquequirao Trek 4 days itinerary

Day 1 – Cusco (or Abancay) to Capuliyoc to Chiquisca

Early morning pickup from Cusco between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. (group tours meet at Plazoleta Regocijo, private tours include hotel pickup). Travelers from Abancay depart around 9:00 a.m.

The drive takes about 4.5 hours to Capuliyoc (2,900 m), the starting point of the trek. Here you’ll enjoy your first lunch overlooking the impressive Apurímac Canyon and the snowcapped Padreyoc mountain.

After lunch, begin your 3-hour downhill hike (8 km) to Chiquisca (1,850 m), passing through dry Andean terrain with warm weather and beautiful views. Dinner and overnight at a small family lodge (2–3 people per room).

  • Distance: 8 km, mostly downhill
  • Altitude: 2,900 m → 1,850 m
  • Hiking time: ~3 hours
  • Meals included: Lunch, Dinner
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Weather: Warm valley, rain possible Dec–Mar

Day 2 – Chiquisca to Apurímac river to Santa Rosa to Marampata

Start early after breakfast. The day begins with a short descent (about 1 hour) to the Apurímac River (1,450 m), then a steep ascent of 1.5–2 hours to Santa Rosa. After a short rest and breakfast here, continue climbing for about 3.5 more hours until you reach Marampata (2,900 m).

Enjoy lunch with panoramic mountain views, then spend the afternoon resting and watching the sunset over the canyon. Dinner and overnight at a local lodge in Marampata (2–3 people per room).

  • Distance: 9 km (2 km downhill + 7 km uphill)
  • Altitude: 1,850 m → 1,450 m → 2,900 m
  • Elevation gain: +1,500 m
  • Hiking time: ~6 hours total
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Weather: Warm in the morning, cool at night

Tip: This is a demanding uphill day; trekking poles are highly recommended.

Day 3 – Marampata to Choquequirao ruins to Santa Rosa Alta

Wake up very early (around 5:00 a.m.) to reach Choquequirao (3,000 m) before sunrise. It’s about a 2-hour (4 km) walk from Marampata. Upon arrival, explore the impressive Inca complex with your guide — visiting terraces, temples, and the famous white llama carvings.

You’ll have a box lunch at the site before returning to Marampata and continuing down to Santa Rosa Alta (2,600 m) for dinner and overnight stay. Expect an intense but rewarding day surrounded by amazing scenery.

  • Distance: ~14 km total (4 km each way + 3 km descent)
  • Altitude: 2,900 m → 3,000 m → 2,600 m
  • Hiking time: 7–8 hours total (including visit)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Box Lunch, Dinner
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Weather: Cool morning, warm afternoon

Highlight: Choquequirao is often called the “sister city” of Machu Picchu but sees far fewer visitors — offering a peaceful and authentic experience.

Day 4 – Santa Rosa Alta to Apurímac river to Chiquisca to Capuliyoc to Cusco or Abancay

After an early snack, begin descending for about 1.5 hours to the Apurímac River (1,450 m). Then climb for 1 hour to Chiquisca where breakfast is served. From there, continue the final uphill section for 3.5–4 hours back to Capuliyoc (2,900 m).

Arrive around midday for lunch, rest, and enjoy the last panoramic view of the canyon. After lunch, return by private transport to Cusco or Abancay (approx. 4 hours drive). Arrival in Cusco is usually around 7:00 p.m.

  • Distance: 14 km total (4 km downhill + 10 km uphill)
  • Altitude: 2,600 m → 1,450 m → 2,900 m
  • Hiking time: 6–7 hours
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
