Inca Jungle Trek 4 days to Machu Picchu trip details

Inca Jungle Trek 4 days to Machu Picchu itinerary

Day 1: Cusco to Santa María

  • Morning: We pick you up from your hotel at 6:30 am. After traveling for about an hour and a half, we stop in the Sacred Valley near Ollantaytambo. Here, you can buy snacks, use the restroom, or grab something to eat. We continue driving to Málaga Pass (4,316 meters above sea level). From there, we start our bike ride down to the high jungle, passing through small villages, fruit fields, and streams. The bike ride lasts 2-3 hours (43 km) and ends in Huamanmarca.
  • Afternoon: We drive to Santa María for lunch. Afterward, we go rafting on the river*. We then take a short drive and start a short walk to our lodging, a local house surrounded by nature.
  • Note: Sometimes, the last short walk to the lodge is skipped if it’s late or the group is tired.
  • Evening: Enjoy a peaceful night surrounded by tranquility in the high jungle.

*During the rainy season, the river can become too dangerous due to strong currents. In such cases, local authorities may close the river and rafting will not be possible. If most of the group agrees, we may organize a visit to nearby waterfalls instead. Please note that this may involve additional costs, as different transport arrangements may be required.

Day 2: Santa María to Santa Teresa

  • Morning: We begin with a coffee tour and breakfast. We then hike a section of the Inca Trail, where we participate in a traditional coca leaf ceremony and admire the stunning scenery and local fruit plants.
  • Note: This is a long hike that includes a short section along a narrow path at higher altitude (where the coca-leaf ceremony takes place).
  • Afternoon: We have lunch in Quellomayo and cross the river using an oroya (cable basket). Next, we visit the thermal baths for a relaxing soak. We continue to Santa Teresa, where we have dinner and stay overnight.
  • Evening: Dinner and rest in Santa Teresa.

Day 3: Santa Teresa to Machu Picchu town (Aguas Calientes)

  • Morning: After breakfast, we go zip-lining (or do the canopy activity). Then, we take a short car ride (20 minutes) to the hydroelectric plant for lunch.
  • Afternoon: We walk 11 km (about 2.5 hours) to the town of Aguas Calientes.
  • Evening: Dinner and overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.

Note: The schedule for day 4 depends on the availability of Machu Picchu tickets and the return option you choose (train or bus via Hydroelectric). The itinerary below shows the standard plan for this day. Your exact schedule may vary depending on ticket availability and transportation choice.

Day 4: Machu Picchu – Cusco

Morning

  • Wake up early and visit Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas.
  • Enjoy a visiting the highlight of this salkantay trek: Machu Picchu. If you have circuit 2 time slot 6:00 AM, join our guided Machu Picchu tour.
  • Optional climb to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (pre-booking required).

Afternoon

  • Return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included).
  • Board the train to Ollantaytambo (if booked).
  • From Ollantaytambo, shared transport by bus or minivan will take you back to Cusco.

Evening

  • Arrive in Cusco historic center, the end of your journey.

Alternative itinerary (if you do not have a Machu Picchu ticket)

  • Day 2: Zip-lining is sometimes done after lunch on this day instead of day 3. In some cases, it might not be possible to move the zip-lining activity to day 2. Unfortunately, we cannot offer a refund if you choose to skip the activity in order to arrive earlier in Aguas Calientes.
  • Day 3: For travelers without a Machu Picchu ticket, the group may start walking around 2:30 AM from Santa Teresa to Aguas Calientes to buy tickets early in the morning. This walk is long and done (mostly) in the dark, so a headlamp is recommended. After arriving in Aguas Calientes, you will have free time before hotel check-in in the afternoon.
  • Day 4: The guided tour of Machu Picchu is only included if you managed to buy circuit 2 with time slot 6:00 AM

Note: The itinerary is subject to change. Times are approximate and may vary.
