Puerto Maldonado 3 days Macaw Clay Lick and Mammal Clay Lick tour itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tambopata National Reserve and Amazon jungle exploration

Your Puerto Maldonado 3 days Macaw Clay Lick tour starts when you arrive in Puerto Maldonado. From here you travel by bus and boat into the Tambopata National Reserve, deep in the Amazon jungle. After arriving at the lodge, you receive a welcome drink and a short introduction about your stay.

In the afternoon you go on a guided walk through primary rainforest. Your guide explains the plants and wildlife and helps you look for monkeys, birds, and other animals. You also visit the canopy tower for wide views over the Amazon jungle.

In the evening, you can join an optional boat ride to spot caimans along the river.

Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick and Tambopata river activities

Early in the morning you travel by boat to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, one of the most famous wildlife spots in the Tambopata National Reserve. Here you watch scarlet macaws, blue-and-gold macaws, and green-winged macaws gather on the riverbank to eat clay.

After returning to the lodge, you enjoy lunch and later go kayaking on the Tambopata River or a nearby jungle stream. This is a great way to see capybaras, turtles, and river birds in the Amazon jungle.

After dinner you join a guided night walk to look for frogs, insects, and other nocturnal animals.

Day 3: Mammal Clay Lick and return to Puerto Maldonado

On the last day of your Puerto Maldonado 3 days Macaw Clay Lick tour, you walk through a section of Amazon rainforest known for mammals. You follow a trail through the Tambopata National Reserve and visit a mammal clay lick, where monkeys and other animals come to eat minerals.

After the walk, you travel back by boat and bus to Puerto Maldonado. You will be dropped off in Puerto Maldonado city center. We should be back around 3:30 PM.
