Short Inca Trail 2 days to Machu Picchu – Backpacker itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Km 104 – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes

You are picked up early from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley and travel by bus and scenic train to Km 104 (Chachabamba). After the checkpoint, your trekking chef prepares a fresh picnic breakfast and you start hiking on the original Inca Trail.

Your first stop is the Inca site of Chachabamba. From here, you hike uphill through cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive ruins along the trail. A freshly prepared picnic lunch is served near the site.

After lunch, you continue hiking for about one more hour to the Sun Gate (Intipunku). This is the first viewpoint where Inca Trail hikers see Machu Picchu. From here, you enter Machu Picchu on Circuit 1-C and enjoy panoramic views of the citadel and surrounding mountains when most day visitors have already left.

After the viewpoints, you take the bus to Aguas Calientes, have dinner at a local restaurant, and stay overnight in a comfortable 2-star hotel.

After the guided tour, you have free time to take photos or, if booked in advance, hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
