Detailed Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Humantay Lake – Salka Glamp (16 km, 7–8 hrs)
We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:30 a.m. After a 2-hour drive to Mollepata for breakfast, we continue to Challacancha (3,600 m), where the trek begins.
You hike about 3 hours to Humantay Lake (4,200 m), one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Peru. After enjoying the views, we descend to Soraypampa for lunch. In the afternoon, hike 2 more hours to our Salka Glamp campsite (3,900 m).
You sleep in comfortable yurt-style tents with mountain views. Tea time and a warm dinner are included. Nights can be cold, but the clear Andean sky makes it unforgettable.

Day 2: Salka Glamp – Salkantay Pass – Collpapampa (18 km, 9 hrs)
Today is the most challenging and rewarding day. After breakfast, you hike 2 hours to Salkantay Pass (4,630 m), the highest point of the trek. Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m) is considered an Apu, a sacred spirit in Inca tradition.
After enjoying the views, descend 3 hours to Wayracmachay for lunch. Then continue 3 more hours into the cloud forest, where the temperature becomes warmer and the landscape greener.
You spend the night in rustic Andean huts in Collpapampa (2,770 m).

Day 3: Collpapampa – Lucmabamba – Aguas Calientes (14–16 km, 6–8 hrs)
This day takes you deeper into the cloud forest. After breakfast, hike to Lucmabamba (2,000 m). Here, you prepare and enjoy a traditional Pachamanca barbecue cooked underground with hot stones.
Later, visit a local organic coffee farm. You learn about harvesting, roasting, and grinding Peruvian coffee. You taste a fresh cup directly from the source.
In the afternoon, drive to Hidroeléctrica and hike along the railway to Aguas Calientes. You spend the night in a comfortable 3-star hotel.

Day 4: Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco
Wake up early and take one of the first buses to Machu Picchu. You arrive before the crowds and may see sunrise over the citadel if the weather is clear.
We include Circuit 2, the most complete Machu Picchu route. It covers the main temples, Sacred Rock, agricultural terraces, and panoramic viewpoints. If Circuit 2 is sold out, we secure the best alternative available, either Circuit 1 or Circuit 3.
Your guided tour lasts 2–3 hours. Optional hikes to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain must be booked in advance.
After your visit, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch. Then travel back to Cusco on the panoramic Vistadome train. A private vehicle transfers you to your hotel.

Altitude and acclimatization for the Salkantay Trek 4 days
The highest point is Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m. Nights at high altitude can drop below freezing. We strongly recommend staying in Cusco at least 2 days before the trek to acclimatize.
Drink plenty of water, eat light meals, and walk at a steady pace. Many travelers bring medication such as Diamox, but consult your doctor first.
Weather
Weather changes quickly on the Salkantay Trek. Expect cold mornings and nights on Days 1 and 2. Days become warmer as you descend into the cloud forest. Rain is possible at any time, even during dry season.
The best months to hike are April to October. May and September offer good weather with fewer crowds. January and February are not recommended due to heavy rain.
Difficulty level of the Salkantay Trek 4 days
The trek is moderate to challenging. Day 2 is the toughest due to altitude and the climb to Salkantay Pass. You do not need to be an athlete, but good physical condition helps. Trekking poles are highly recommended.
